How to turn Heinz salt-free ketchup into barbecue sauce

Updated: Nov 11, 2023

If you want a recipe for salt-free (low carb) barbecue sauce from scratch (because maybe you can't eat the Heinz salt-free ketchup because it's high in potassium or you can't find it), go here.

This recipe is what you need to take a bottle of Heinz salt-free ketchup and turn it into barbecue sauce. I usually don't like products that use potassium chloride in place of salt. They generally have a bitter aftertaste but one exception is this Heinz salt-free ketchup. You'll still taste a little of that potassium chloride in it but it's pretty subtle and it'll satisfy your craving for that sticky, sweet ketchup you grew up eating. Use this ketchup as a base for a very quick and easy barbecue sauce that you can make in the microwave.

Ingredients:

1 14-ounce bottle of Heinz salt-free ketchup

5 tablespoons apple cider vinegar

2 tablespoons molasses

1 tablespoon onion powder

1 tablespoon paprika

1 tablespoon smoked paprika

1 tablespoon salt-free mustard

1 tablespoon dark brown sugar

1 tablespoon honey

optional: dash of cayenne pepper, liquid smoke, or black pepper

Mix everything together in small saucepan and simmer on medium-low until the sugar has all dissolved. Alternatively, mix all the ingredients together in a microwave-safe bowl and stir to combine. Microwave for 30 seconds (covered), stir, and then repeat until all sugars have dissolved. This sauce will keep for weeks in the refrigerator.
